Off Ice Classes

Great Park Ice offers off ice classes to help improve flexibility, strength, agility, balance, movement, and performance! Each of the courses are designed to accelerate a skaters' on ice development. Figure skaters are encouraged to enroll in off ice classes to complement on ice training as the sport places substantial strength and flexibility demands on a skater’s body. The Great Park Ice off ice instructors are distinguished and esteemed professionals with years of experience and expertise and are sure to help progress a skater's on ice skills!

FOUNDATIONAL

The foundational level includes all our intro level classes in Dance, Conditioning, and Stretch.  These classes form the basis for all future off-ice training at Great Park Ice.  Most classes are for ages 7+, while our Snowplow level classes are for ages 3-6.  These classes are generally good for Low Basic levels.

Learn the base elements that are utilized in all dance classes and introduce skaters to terminology, history and etiquette required for all future dance classes.

Focus on the key components of strength and conditioning by learning to properly Run, Jump and Balance, along with gaining key strength in the core and stabilization muscles.

Begin your flexibility training by learning the basic stretches all athletes need to succeed both on and off the ice.

CORE

The core level expands upon the basic skills learned in our foundational classes and lays the groundwork for becoming an Elite skater.  At this level, skaters have expanded class offerings with the introduction of some specialized offerings, and a continuation of the things worked on in the previous level.

Ballet 1 (must have passed Snowplow Pre-Ballet 2 or Pre-Ballet)

Advanced Beginner class focusing on Classical Ballet technique with the intention of elevating performance quality on the ice.

ELITE

The Elite level is for those advanced skaters looking to strengthen their abilities and compete at higher levels.  At this level, students not only continue working on their strength and technique but also begin working on performance quality with more complex dance classes.  These classes are generally appropriate for skaters at the Academy level or higher.

ADULT

Adult off ice classes is designed specifically for Adult skaters looking to improve skills in an environment suitable for their needs.  All classes are open level, so no prerequisites are required to take the class.

ADULT CONDITIONING (AGES 15+)

Open level class focusing on building strength, endurance and coordination for adult skaters

Open level adult class focusing on functional movements while increasing general range of motion for skaters to succeed on the ice.

Coaching Specialty / Philosophy:
He specializes in elite jump technique, pole harness, and freestyle for all ages and levels.

 

As a pioneer and innovator in injury prevention, Benoit has developed specific exercises and programs and created special training devices to enhance the skaters' on-ice performances.

He is a multidisciplinary high-performance coach and worked alongside Olympic Coach Frank Carroll from 2005 until his retirement, producing multiple US, World, and Olympic Medalists and Champions.  HIs duties include the design and implementation of customized and individualized specific programs that are aimed at enhancing figure skaters' flexibility, strength and aerobic conditioning.  Benoit also developed non-impact warm-up/warm-down routines and sports restoration modalities.

Benoit is part of the US Figure Skating national network of sports science and medicine specialists to help athletes and coaches around the country find performance support.  Since 2010, he has been collaborating with the United States Olympic Committee Strength & Conditioning division and US Figure Skating High Performance directors to provide his services to Team USA athletes.

He has coached track and field, basketball, and served as head strength and conditioning coach for a local youth travel team.  He was also a consultant for the Detroit Pistons.  As a former professional basketball player, Benoit can relate to the athlete mentality, both physically and emotionally.
